Breast Breast Lift Complications

Breast lifts involve reshaping the breast tissue and repositioning the nipple to achieve a perky and youthful chest. As with all surgery there are inherent risks that women need to be aware of before going undergoing the procedure. To that end, this page outlines a few of the most common breast lift complications – along Dr. Rahban’s approach to minimizing the chances of them occurring.

Asymmetrical breasts

This is one of the most common breast lift complications. It tends to occur when your breasts were asymmetrical to begin with, and the surgeon failed to account for this fact while performing the lift.

Dr. Rahban will evaluate your chest as a whole and take note of any asymmetry before your procedure begins. Before surgery he takes extra time marking you in the standing position in order to address the asymmetry. During surgery, he’ll remove precise amounts of skin and tissue from each breast, weighing out the amounts so that he can correct for size and shape differences with accuracy. His end goal is to achieve a balanced, harmonious and symmetrical final look.

Breast shape irregularities

Although rare, it is possible to emerge from your procedure with oddly shaped breasts. This tends to happen when the surgeon removes excess skin and tissue in an uneven manner often from incorrect marking prior to surgery. It can also occur due to changes that develop during the healing process.

In addition to taking extra time while performing your markings, he will sit you up and down multiple times during your surgery to ensure even and round shaped breasts at the end. He is careful during the surgery to treat the tissue delicately in order to minimize wound complications after.

Poor breast lift scars

No matter who performs your breast lift, you will have scars. It’s an inevitable result of creating an incision in your chest. However, these scars can vary quite a bit. Depending on your plastic surgeon, they can be faint and imperceptible, or unsightly and very noticeable.

Dr. Rahban knows how concerned his patients are regarding breast lift scars, and as such he goes to great lengths to minimize them. He personally closes all of his breast lift incisions, rather than delegating this task to surgical techs as many other plastic surgeons do.

In this way, patients reap the benefits of his unrivaled technical skill and ensure that they emerge from surgery with the smallest and faintest scars possible. Additionally most surgeons tend to close just the superficial skin layer, hence putting all the tension of the closure on the scar. Therefore thickening is very common. Dr Rahban’s closure is very compulsive starting with the breast tissue and therefore multiple layers are closed prior to the skin, minimizing the tension on the skin and leading to an optimal scar.

Loss of nipple sensation

Because breast lifts are fairly invasive procedures that involve reshaping the breast tissue and repositioning the nipple, there’s an increased opportunity for nerve damage that can result in the loss of your nipple sensation. However, an experienced surgeon like Dr. Rahban can minimize your risk by using a careful and conservative surgical approach, thus increasing the likelihood that your sensitivity is preserved after your lift.

Bleeding (hematoma)

After a breast lift, there’s a chance that a hematoma can develop, trapping blood underneath the surface of your skin. Hematomas typically occur within the first week after surgery, and cause pain, firmness, increased swelling, bruising and scarring that can affect your appearance. Fortunately, hematomas are easy to prevent with the proper precautions.

For example, Dr. Rahban will have you stop taking any aspirin, supplements and anti-inflammatories for a full two weeks prior to your procedure, as these drugs are known to promote bleeding. By eliminating them completely, you increase your chances of an optimal healing process. Additionally during your procedure he is very compulsive about hemostasis and stopping all bleeding prior to closure.

Infection

An infection is one of the most serious breast lift complications – but it’s also one of the rarest among Dr. Rahban’s patients. This is because he and his team take every precautionary measure possible to prevent an infection and ensure a smooth recovery period. To begin, we’ll instruct you to wash with an antiseptic soap the night before and morning of surgery, and we’ll administer antibiotics before and after your procedure to preserve your health. We’ll also provide you with detailed instructions on how to care for your incisions, so you can avoid an infection as you heal.
